Online PhD Degree

A doctoral degree is abbreviated as Ph.D. It stands for Doctor of Philosophy. A PhD Degree signifies a graduate’s expertise in a certain field in consideration of a thorough academic research he or she has conducted and defended before a panel of top professors of his university. As with the master's degree, a doctorate is considered to be a highly specialized achievement. When you receive a Ph.D., you have gone through an incredible amount of study and training in a niche of your chosen field and done an immense amount of intense work and research. A doctorate usually requires very advanced studies and original research in your field.

Online PhD Degree

The online PhD experience can take anywhere from four to six years to complete, as the process entails at least a year and a half of intense studies, directed by a panel of three to five professors who then administer oral or written exams. These tests will determine the student’s readiness for the next level, which is the oft-heard-of dissertation. The dissertation, or thesis, is a book-length investigation into a very specific aspect of the student’s chosen field. The dissertation can take semesters or years to finish, and then must be defended before the student’s professor-panel. Once the thesis has been defended successfully, it must be filed with the university before the title of “doctor” can be awarded.

PhD Degree Overview

A PhD degree is by no means a simple thing to get. But if you have the four to eight years to put towards high-level classes, in-depth research, and a dissertation or doctoral project, you can earn one of the most prestigious degrees awarded. People with doctoral degrees have proven their dedication to their field of study and their extensive knowledge of that field. Therefore, people who hold doctorates are extremely employable and very well-paid.

For the increasing number of doctoral students balancing a family with their studies, online doctorate degrees offer the advantage of a flexible schedule and give these motivated students the ability to fit their studies in around family or work obligations.

The proliferation of online doctorate degrees also means students don't have to relocate to pursue a program that may not be available in their hometown - something that can be a significant advantage in the highly specialized world of doctoral programs.

Not all doctoral degrees are available online. Some schools require students to take coursework or conduct research on-campus, only allowing them to work online as they prepare their dissertation. Students interested in a particular school or program should contact individual doctoral departments for more information.

Benefits of a PhD Degree

One of the greatest benefits of obtaining a PhD is increased professional flexibility. For the most part, PhD recipients can work on whatever interests them. A Doctor of Linguistics might decide to spend her time studying the speech patterns of mid-western American citizens, or she might take part in an expedition to the farthest reaches of the north to study the complexities of the Inuit language. A Doctor of Computer Science might spend his time constructing robots with increasingly humanoid features or become a consultant to a firm in Silicon Valley. Becoming a PhD graduate generally makes the recipient an authority on the subject, and the information available from people who are authorities within their fields are in high demand by authorities in others.

Many universities are now offering online PhD programs to accommodate professionals who are busy with work and family and who have not enough time left to attend a classroom lecture to pursue their dream of earning post-graduate degrees. It is not uncommon for it to take over five years to get a PhD Degree since it is so specialized, but in the end you will have your title of "doctor" and doors will open for careers in academia or high-end jobs within your field.

Types of PhD Degrees

There are three types of PhD Degree Programs –
Research or terminal: Research doctorates are usually recognized for their academic research that can be published into useful references in schools and that contributes to human knowledge. Those who fall under this category are required to submit and defend a doctoral thesis. Teachers are usually encouraged to pursue a doctoral degree in research in order to attain a higher position in their field of profession.

Professional: Professional doctorates, meanwhile, are given to specific fields of profession such as law, medicine, music or ministry. Most recipients of this degree are not necessarily involved in academic research or activities.

Honorary: The honorary doctoral degree, on the other hand, is conferred to persons who have made great contributions to a particular field which is not usually related to academics.

Ph.D. in Business Administration – A Ph.D. in business or the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) usually leads to research and teaching posts in the field of business.

Ph.D. in Psychology and Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) – prepares professionals in the field of psychology to excel in the present health care settings, private practices, industries and the academe. It has specializations in educational psychology, organizational psychology, school psychology, clinical psychology, professional counseling, industrial psychology and many more.

Ph.D. in Education – this degree usually prepares students for careers in the academic field such as teachers or school administrators. Meanwhile, the Ed.D. trains administrators in the primary and secondary schools or teachers in the academic departments of education.

Ph.D. in Arts – a doctorate in liberal arts encompasses a wide range of subjects. It provides deeper exposure to history, art and culture, social systems, communications, business and other subjects. This degree puts emphasis on communication skills, abstract learning, problem solving through reasoning, logic and deduction, open debating, among others.

Ph.D. in Engineering – various doctorate degrees in engineering can be earned through distance learning. Popular fields of study include computer science sometimes referred to as a Doctor of Computer Science (DCS), electrical engineering, civil engineering and mechanical engineering. A Doctor of Engineering degree (D.Eng) is sometimes given by certain programs.

Jobs with a PhD Degree

Employers are more willing to hire and, perhaps more importantly, less willing to fire PhD holders. For people looking to get into research positions within their chosen fields, a Doctorate is often the only degree which will lead to these positions. While Master’s degree holders can find work in the fields they desire, positions in research are often reserved for those with the training and expertise afforded by a PhD program.

For those looking to do research within an academic setting, that is, to become professors at a university, PhDs are a necessity. Colleges and universities have become more selective as the pool of PhD holders has grown. Having a PhD is not altogether required, but becoming a professor at a university without a PhD is exceedingly difficult. Colleges need professors to bolster the reputations of their departments as well as the reputation of the college as a whole, and having PhD's helps them accomplish this.

Getting a PhD online can help you attain your dream job. Whether teaching English, practicing law, researching vaccines, or managing a school district as superintendent, your online degree will have helped you move into an elite group of professionals, striving to make a difference in the world.
